Stationary:
Pencil, marker or pen? What size for the notebook? Once again, there is not a solution better than another. It's just a question of habits and preference. Personally, I have a preference for large notebook simply because we don't have to turn the page too often. The notebooks given by the FFSA (Federation Francaise du Sport Automobile) on the French championship rounds are spotless. Regarding the kind of pens, I'm using black pens for asphalts rallies. I'm writing the pace-notes with it. Then I correct with a pencil. Eventually, I use a red pen to underline a special pace I need to tell in one block. In the evening, I rub the corrections and re-write them with my black pen. Instead to cross my notebook, I use white stickers that I can write on them. Markers are not the best because with a rainy weather, your notebook will be unreadable. There is no need to use many different colours; it's not a drawing contest… On gravel rallies, I use a pencil (and don't forget your cushion) as you have to do so many corrections at the same time and you don't have time to use the stickers. As the writing with a pencil is thinner, it's a bit more difficult to read. On top of that during a night stage, the writing is shinning with the lamp (light or head light) For further details, refer to the “pace-note” chapte.

The bag
Or should I say bags. In one hand, we need one for the recce where to find the rally regulations, a list of all the useful numbers (organisation, hotel, etc…), the FFSA regulation, the road-books… In the other hand, we need a bag for the rally itself. We need to keep this one light, but need to get all the necessary including the road book of the current leg, same for the pace-note book(s), some tools, a rope (we never know), gloves, an extra watch / chronometer, an spare battery for the radio, a torch in case of night stages, the rally regulations, your driving license and your rally license, the car paperwork, a pressure manometer, a few rilsan collars and the “OK” card ( OK on one side and X on the other).
